Have you ever noticed how prideful you can get? I’m going to bet that you haven’t. There were a few messages I’ve heard on the same passage recently and that was 1 Peter 5:5-7. It compared pride and humility with each other, and showed that they are direct opposites. When you’re humble you can’t be prideful and prideful you can’t be humble.
Verse 5 says that we are to be humble as young men are to be submissive to the elders. We are to clothe ourselves in humility towards one another because God will oppose the proud, but give grace to the humble.
So how do we become humble? Verse 6 says that we are to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift us up in due time. Then in verse 7 we are to cast all our anxiety on him because he cares for you.
What is this all saying then? It’s simple really. It’s saying that we can’t be humble until we cast our anxieties on God. We as a fallen people are so prideful and arrogant that when we don’t give our worries to God we’re saying that He is NOT big enough or powerful enough to handle our problems. When we worry we’re being prideful.
If we are a fallen people then why would God want us to cast our worries on him and become humble? In verse 7 it says we are to cast our anxieties on him because He CARES for YOU. If you’re worried about something, anything at all, so is He. He wants to carry that burden for you because He can. God is good, and He loves you.
We need to trust that God will work everything out the way it is to be done and give Him that worry.
I’ve rambled quite a bit, but I think I got my point across.
